Same issue as many others
il y a 3 ans
I've had my soldering iron for about a year now and it works flawlessly for small jobs. The last few times I've used it, however, the jobs took a bit longer than in the past and the knurled piece that holds the end started to melt. Once this happened, the tool was useless until it cooled back down and the plastic reset. This piece "should" have been made out of ceramic so the heat wouldn't be wicked off like metal would and it wouldn't melt like it does with plastic.......as it stands right now, I can only use it only really small jobs that take less than 5 mins or so at full heat.

Works Well. Sturdiness Not Quite there yet
il y a 5 ans
As a soldering iron this is the best soldering iron I've used in 20 years as a technician.
The heat is enough to easily solder Two-Way radio bases and heavy guage automotive wire with the chisel bit.
The LED light is an amazing addition that makes working under a dash so much easier.
Like others though the collar for the tip broke. Milwaukee Australia said the part is not a replaceable part. Unfortunately after the collar broke the heating element broke afterwards.
So it may not quite be strong enough in a profesional trade environment unless you're extremely careful with it.

Read the reviews, I don't leave it on. Perfect!

I've read the reviews about the melted collar. 2 things; it's an m12, battery-powered AND it seems to have an issue with the collar melting. Two good reasons to only turn it on when I need to stick wires together. Initial heat up is under 20 seconds, follow up is less than that. I setup a few solders, turn it on, solder, turn it off, setup a few solders, turn it on, solder, turn it off, rinse and repeat. So far about a year into it and no issue. Our installers for the company I work for use them without issue as well. Maybe we got good units? I bought one for my dad, a former Airforce electrician that's always coming up with unique excuses to stick wires together and he loves his as well. So far, so good!
I'm a huge fan of Milwaukee tools! I was so excited to find the soldering offered in the M12 series. The first time I used it I was impressed with how fast it heated and how it told me when it was cool enough to touch. The third time the battery indicator told me it need a charge. I replaced the battery with a fully charged one however still the indicator told me it needed a charge. I charged and swapped batteries with no luck. I'm really disappointed with the short life of this soldering iron. I still gave it 4 stars for the performance the first couple times. BUMMER!
I moved away from Makita 12v to Milwaukee m12 ONLY because of this soldering iron when it was freshly released a couple years ago. It failed a few monts ago due to an electronic component. Luckily my electronic repair tech had the spares to get it back up and running. And now, like all others, have to deal with a melted retainer nut. I looked at the service manual and did not see any parts to solve this problem. Im assuming that Milwaukee may have a revision to this part as there is, and will be, more failures due to this manufacturer defect.

Needs further investigating
il y a 2 ans
Our Maintenance Department loves this iron, however it did not last too long before it ceased heating and would only blink a green light. After disassembly it was found that the inline fuse to the heating element has blown. The tip did not melt nor did the unit overheat in any way, it just stopped heating. A 1.5AH battery was all that was ever used with this iron. Would changing the battery with the switch in the on position possibly be a cause for blowing the element's fuse? It is a convenient tool, however, not as reliable as it could be.

Milwaukee meltdown
il y a 5 ans
I bought this product a little over a year ago. Initially, I was absolutely thrilled. I own a dozen M12 tools which I use daily for my business, and this soldering iron was a welcome addition. There are times when I do a great deal of low voltage electrical work and the soldering iron was the last holdout needing an extension cord. After a few months of use, like many others, the plastic collar holding the tip flange in place melted and broke beyond usability. Now, the device is practically useless. This is not what I expect from Milwaukee.

Great tool but.....
il y a 3 ans
I've enjoyed my m12 soldering iron since I bought it but I've had to have it warrantied out 4-5 times because I'll us it, put it away with everything working. Then the next time I go to use it, it'll just sit there and blink green and never warm up. So then I have tool have my tool man send it in for warranty. Now I play the waiting game and I'm without it for a couple weeks. Now every time this happens warranty gives me a brand new one which is great. I do car audio for a living and been doing it for 20 years and I use it everyday. So when I'm without it I have to break out my corded soldering iron which is a lot more inconvenient when wiring alarms. But like I said great tool and great warranty I just wish I didn't have to use warranty so much

What a bummer
il y a un an
I have had my soldering iron replaced 3 times already and now a 4th as it continues to have the same problem of not starting and heating up, it will just flash green and keep trying but never get hot. I've had the tool replaced each time and they've only gotten a few uses each before they break, this one did a total of 4 wires before breaking again
It's only being used to do thin light automotive wiring
There have been no hastles each time getting a new iron and when it works it works fantastic, very much a Shame that it doesn't last
Have used this product off and on for 3 years. It's good to work with, but I've had it sent back for warranty once, because it stopped working and the plastic collar get's soft when the heating element gets hot, which is a nuisance when you need to make good contact with whatever you're heating. Nothing was done about the collar, the tool came back in working condition, but today it stopped working again, should still be under 5 year warranty, but do I really want that soft collar back? The green led keeps flashing, but that's it.

Great, at first but....
il y a 2 ans
I borrowed my friend's Milwaukee M12 when my previous soldering iron went out on me. I was super impressed that I went out and bought the Milwaukee M12 with the case and charger. Once again I was impressed when I bought this until after about the fourth use when the plastic collet that screws onto the top had melted and the metal threaded piece came loose and now I can't use it at all. Can't find this part to buy and apparently a lot of people have this issue. Other than that the soldering iron was great. (Tried to epoxy it)

What took so long?
il y a 6 ans
to the guy that posted the one-star review show me where you can get a battery powered soldering iron that works this nice you can use all day long and not have to put batteries in it. It works best when you put the 6 amp hour battery in it you can do up to like A 1∅ wire like a battery cable on a car battery it will solder it. And why the heck would you use anything but a Weller lined condition isolated soldering iron station on a circuit board makes no sense. Keep the tip clean and snug. Heats up in 20 seconds.
As a mechanic I do quite a bit of soldering, fixing wiring harnesses, replacing broken plugs, adding after market parts such as light bars and stereo's. Having a soldering iron that heats up this fast without a cord getting in the way is priceless. The only complaint I have is the included battery is a little small for me, but I'm not even going to take away from it's rating for it. 40 minutes is a good amount of time, I just use it a lot. But being able to use high capacity batteries for those longer jobs rocks!
I have found the iron nice to use, lots of power and heat recovery, a little heavy but that is to be expected with a cordless iron. My two big complaints would be I would expect temperature adjustability in something this size with the amount of electronics inside. Second, very disappointed the made it with proprietary tips. They only have a point and a chisel tip and both are pricey to replace. All other tips I have tried put pressure on the ceramic core, clearly just a ploy to force you to use their tips.
I am a huge fan of milwaukee tools and I use them on an almost everyday basis. From impacts and drills to jigsaws and cutoff wheels. I was excited to get the soldiering iron and use it at work and home, but like alot of the other reveiws I'm seeing now it's not a good buy. The tip melted on mine like so many others. There really should be a recall or some kind of a update for this issue. Its not really that cheap of a soldiering gun to buy so seeing all the reveiws about it melting down is disappointing.
I always depend on quality, brand name, and dependability, I have a few power tools by Milwaukee, l like the ease of swapping batteries from another tool is such a convenience. For years none have failed me till I got my hands on this tool. I do alot of 12v electrical and Soldering it very important when you provide good quality of work. Knowing it's a Milwaukee tool I over estimated it. Somewhat of a poorly designed plastic like peice has melted as I left it on for a few minutes unattended. I was in disbelief when I seen my new tool damaged under very little use. I didn't realize that leaving it on heating up while I prep my wires was going to cause it to melt. Not recommended which really sucks because I depend on Milwaukee. Hopefully they figure out a much better replacement. Thank you

Stopped heating
il y a 4 ans
I bought this soldering iron around a year ago, as a freshman in college, but overall usage hasn’t even been a year. I’m studying physics, but I’m required to take wiring and programming labs, where a soldering iron is required. I take very good care of it, yet it has stopped heating up. I’m not quite sure what to do, because it was needed for class, and now this has happened. I’m a college student, and I don’t have money to just keep buying soldering irons. I love all of your other tools, and have loved this tool, up to this point, but it sucks that it can’t even last me a year, when I’ve realistically only used it for two semesters, and not even every day. Milwaukee makes great tools, but I’m not sure I’m all that satisfied with this one, after only owning it a year, and having it stop work.

Was Really great then was really great disappointm
il y a 4 ans
I had a friend give me a brand new one and I was amazed at how well it actually worked when I first tried it I was skeptical about a cordless battery powered soldering iron(and with good reasoning as it turns out) but it out did my expectations go even a corded soldering iron but upon using it for only the second time its performance was a little less hot(or maybe too hot) when the heat began melting the tip holder and it completely snapped off breaking the housing and the heating element
This tool is excellent for making fast and solid electrical connections wherever you need them. I personally use this for misc. electrical repairs on aviation fuel trucks. However, I would not recommend this one for extended use. I tried using this tool to de-solder and solder about 45 LED's from a circuit board. It did not last the whole time. Like everyone else, the unit overheats and the collar for the tip melted on me. The unit still worked but the tip was very loose and wobbly. I sent it in for warranty repairs and was sent back a brand new one. I still have more circuit boards to do, but I will have to use my trusty plug-in soldering iron for this purpose. This would be a perfect tool if Milwaukee was able to work out the collar melting all the time. Definitely some room for improvement here.
I bought this soldering iron as soon as I knew it existed. I have probably 15 other M12 tools and roughly 20 batteries. It has worked well for me until recently when the plastic retaining collar failed and is not available as a replacement part. Perhaps Milwaukee should offer a revised part made of a better, more heat resistant material. I will not be replacing this tool out of my pocket, at least not with the same thing. That’s a shame though, it being cordless has really been handy.

Lasted 1 month doing car installs
il y a un an
I bought it june 12th 2023 it is used for car audio installs it does not get left on for periods of time over 1 minute if it does its for a max of under 2 minutes. Today (july 11th 2023) it crapped out on me. It's light turns on it tells me the battery life left and it flashes green to indicate its heating up. I can hold the end while it's "heating up"... I for one am extremely extremely disappointed in the quality of this item from the brand that I genuinely go to first as I am not a massive purchaser but I have friends with full packouts like everything they own is milwaukee. Any and all electric tools I own are milwaukee. Perhaps this is one tool. I'll have to find somewhere else unfortunately. I'd also want my money back vs going through the warranty department 9 times which is live feedback from a coworker.
Purchased about 6 weeks ago as did several of my technicians. Very good unit performs well.
Only issue that we have all had is that once we complete the task the unit is to hot to put back in tool bag and stays hot for quite some time. I have already melted tool bag. Most Gas irons come with a cover which can go be placed over tip immediately after use. Unit really needs this cover which as a safety automatically switches off unit. I find myself back to using my gas iron.
I work in estate homes. This is the best soldering iron I have used. I work in tight spaces and on tall ceilings. Love not having an extention cord 15' in the air. Because I use Flux to clean, and make my connections. I have yet to replace the top. I purchased mine 2 years ago.
I would recommend only buy it with the case. This way it protects the iron. Plus I only use a 3.0 m12 battery or larger. This way I can have it standing to mark so of the more chall connections.
One of the best irons I've used... while it lasted
il y a 3 ans
I have used many of irons through the years and this was by far my favorite. I loved everything about it until it stopped heating up. The element did not break and the top didnt melt either. It turns on but will not flash green lights and never heats up.
I am kinda crushed as I did just purchase it about 2 months ago. It was only usef a dozen or so times for light, 2 second jobs.
I really hope I can find a ceramic element online to replace mine with.. I have found the other plastic that has melted on other folks' irons online but havent been able to pin down a 100% matching source for the elements.
Anyways, my love for Milwaukee tools far outweighs my dissatisfaction for my baby breaking down on me. Milwaukee really does make some of the best tools I've ever used.. and I grew up using blue point and snap on!

Used for 3 months. No longer works.
il y a 4 ans
I used this product for 3 months. Worked great at first. I transferred to a new job. I had this stored in my locked tool box in a climate controlled facility for 5 months. Got it out to use it the other day and it doesn't work. It was used a total of 3 months. very well maintained by a person with boder line OCD. It sat in a tool box for 5 months and just quit working. Some serious redesign needs to be done. Extremely disappointed. I cant even repair it.
Initially i was introduced to this tool at work, and ordered a three for our shop, while still in the honeymoon phase i bought one for occasional personal use. when the first one at work failed i assumed it was a fluke.
They are all dead now, within less than a year.
i was hoping my personal unit would be ok since i rarely used it but it has also died.
unfortunately this appears to be a poorly designed product, i am hoping to seek a warranty claim on mine

Awesome until they melt.
il y a 4 ans
Had one for a couple years and thermal fuse blew, I ended up fixing it but bought another one just got back up. After only using it a few times the collar melted on the new one. ended up swapping over the collar from my old one and it melted that collar too. Now I’m stuck with 2 irons that get hot but very flimsy. Is there an upgraded collar for this? And or can I get a new collar? I would even buy several of them and replace them frequently if needed.
... until the plastic melts. What do I get because I didn't buy this tool and then send it back for warranty service/replacement? If I was a masochist I'd buy one and then use my rotary tool to remove the offending collar so I could replace it with epoxy or heat resistant potting sludge. But I'm not and I'd rather your engineers fix it so I can buy one in good conscience.
At any rate, these reviews are quite helpful. Keep up the good work.

Unimpressed
il y a 2 ans
So I have had 2 of the older model soldering irons both of which broke in the same location everyone else's has. In the last week I purchased the new model which appeared to have resolved the head breakage problem however the iron stopped working after 30m of use. Took it back and got another today. What do you know same result. Now I have to take this one back. Dare I grab another one? There must be a manufacturing defect. Please advise.

Good while it lasted
il y a 3 ans
I bought this iron about 3 months ago, and used it regularly for on the road work. Having several other tools from the M12 line, this was a welcome addition. Unfortunately, today the plastic collar melted and bent the tip. This in itself might not have been a huge deal except that there are no replaceable parts avaliable. While this was a great product while it lasted, it is disappointing to see something like this occur after such a short time.
