Leaks Oil
il y a un an
I really like this saw, but it leaks oil!! What the heck! However, it is lightweight and just I was needing.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Battery life is awesome!!! Lightweight, and plenty of power. Adjusting the chain is quick and easy.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased this to cut down a dead tree at my parents home. The tree was approximately 7” at it’s base. It cut it down with ease-surprisingly so! Then I proceeded to cut down a diseased tree in my yard that was approximately 8” at it’s base and over 20 feet tall- again it handled the job easily. Then I cleaned up to a height of 6 foot all the branches on 5 trees at my property line that are 20 year old cedar trees. Again this little guy cuts like a warm knife through butter. I have a gas powered chainsaw but it is a hassle to run it dry to avoid the ethanol gasoline clogging up the carburetor or to buy special fuel that is alcohol free. I would still use my gas powered chain saw for a major job but I have not needed it for a long time since I purchased this little guy. It is light weight and extremely quiet compared to the gas powered unit. FYI to remove the cap for the bar oil simply push down and turn simultaneously counterclockwise or it will fight you. I highly recommend this unit and plan to purchase the larger one in the future. Little by little I am replacing my gas powered lawn tools with Dewalt battery powered units due to my ongoing frustration with ethanol gasoline clogging the jets in the carburetors.

Great saw and handy
il y a 5 ans
perfect saw and great addition to my tool collection
Great idea, maybe a redesign for the tree workers.
il y a 4 ans
I use dewalt tools so this little gem goes well with my collection. I use this battery powered chainsaw when I climb trees or work out of a bucket lift. This saw has proven itself to me over and over. I have a 14” Oregon bar and chain and it cuts through 6”-9” oak with no problem -as long as you know what to look and do when operating a chainsaw. Example: let the chain do the work, keep a sharp chain, grease the bar nose, use light pressure when cutting and bucking motion when cutting. putting heavy pressure while cutting will stop the chain and drain the battery quicker.
I have cut several canopies and even 12” pine with this saw. It’s made me money, and continues to do so.
The reasons why I give this a 4 star rating when it can achieve a 5 out of five are:
There needs to be an Ambidextrous trigger unlock, or even better, a grip safety like on all chainsaws.
A way to add metal bumper spikes. The chain “chatters” or skips along the first contact of cutting. Especially when cutting hardwoods.
Add a lanyard ring/attachment point. I use this saw to cut When I climb trees for removal. A way to attach this to my lanyard would be great.
If dewalt R&D dept reads this I hope you guys do a redesign or even a new model in a top handle saw design with additions mention above, everything considered, I love it. I have no regrets about purchasing this.
I was skeptical about a battery-powered chainsaw. But then I realized that most of the things I'll need this for are on the smaller side. Plus the same 20V system powered other tools I was gonna need, so I took the plunge. And boy am I glad I did.
I had 3 big bush/weed clusters in my back yard that combined stems to form a pretty hefty trunk. They had to go. Took less than an hour, and would've taken half that time if I didn't go back and scalp the stumps.
I realized when shopping that anything I'd need a bigger saw for....I'd be afraid to take down by myself. So what's the point of getting a heftier saw?
Power....plenty for the type of stuff I'd be doing...and then some.
Battery.....I got an hour of heavy duty cutting, and none of the lights even came on, so I'm guessing it had a ton of time left.
Weight....a bit heavy. My arms are still sore an hour later, but that might be because of the awkward cutting position.
Overlooked benefit.....my goodness, it was easy to start. If you've ever had a smaller gas-powered chainsaw and tried to pull the cord 100 times to get it started, you'll be amazed.
Bottom line, I would not go out and clear a plot of land with this. But for the average homeowner that hates to ask the neighbor to borrow theirs, this is a perfect tool.
I already bought a hedge trimmer in the bundle and will be getting a pole saw and string trimmer from the same product line soon.
SAW WILL NOT START-Defective Safety Switch/Trigger
il y a 3 mois
Saw will not start and it was only used occasionally for very light use. Two major design flaws that make this saw junk and make me question why I've invested thousands of dollars in Dewalt tools. First Issue - Leaking Oil - You can't make a plastic oil tank that will hold oil??? I've lived with that issue since day one. I rarely use this saw because I have to dump the oil before storing it back in my tool trailer. Second Issue - Saw will not even start now and its probably a defective safety switch or trigger switch (according to YouTube DIY repair clips). I expected to burn up the motor, over heat the plastic housing, strip a gear, wear out a bearing, break a plastic part, but a broken safety switch with very light use?????? Extremely Disappointed!!!!!!!!!
I've bought two of the bigger model chain saws to go on our fire department trucks so we didn't have to worry about starting a gasoline engine, but I've got to be able to trust our tools to start in an emergency situation. I'm going to read the reviews on these other saws to see if they have the similar issues with these cheap or defective parts causing similar problems.
No Dewalt, I'm not shipping this saw off to some far away service center just to be told the repair cost are more than the value of the tool. There are too many reviews with the same issue. This is a factory design defect and you should have issued a factory recall or addressed this issue years ago.

Great saw, poor execution
il y a 3 ans
As a dewalt tool lover, i hope dewalt listens and takes into account everything I have to saw. I know I’m just one person, but there’s a common feel going on in the power tool world right now. Chainsaw is great and very powerful for a 20v. 5ah battery will last for a while, and the built in braking (not to be mistaken for the kickback brake) system of an electric motor is very safe. BUT, the pros do not outweighs the cons. The oiling system is a nightmare, and this isn’t a “those guys are over reacting” or “they’re just unlucky and got a bad saw” ordeal, from what I can tell the chain oiler is just an open hole that dumps oil onto the chain. It isn’t adjustable or regulated in any way. Anyone that says “all chainsaws leak oil”, I agree with you 100%, my Stihl and Husqvarna both leak a little over time but not so much that I can’t lay them in the shop overnight. The dewalt will make a mess in a short period of time, EVERYTIME!
And finally, there are no felling dogs. Not a huge deal, but any chainsaw without these isn’t a real chainsaw in my opinion.
Overall, I give it a 5/10. I wouldn’t buy it again knowing what I know now. The simple fact that I can’t use it at my house and drive 5 miles down the road to a family members house and trim some trees without making an oily mess make this tool a hassle. With dewalt having the 20v/60v flex batteries, they have a chance to make some awesome products that others simply can’t make. I hope the R&D department and QC department steps their game up
I've had this 20V chainsaw for about three years. During that time it has seen a lot of use and has always performed well. The only issue I ever had was that it constantly weeps oil when stored. The best solution to this in the end (tried storing with blade side up, tried opening filler to vent after use) was to run down the oil supply as low as possible before putting it away and then to store it blade side up with plenty of pig mats beneath.
Yesterday, I went to cut some limbs and when I pulled the trigger the saw started and stopped. It ran the next time I pulled the trigger, but the third time it did nothing. I checked the battery, the brake, etc. Then as the machine was out of warranty I pulled it apart on the bench to see if I could diagnose the cause. (After searching the internet and seeing lots of people say this saw had failed in a similar fashion - class action anyone?)
The issue is in the electronics package that sends current to the motor. This handles the switching and safety features and also pulses the current to the correct stator to cause the motor to turn (this is the nature of brushless motors). It is potted, so there is no diving deeper into the electronics to determine exactly what failed. (And it was definitely not the motor as pulsing the stators from a test source caused it to spin correctly.)
Because I own tons of Dewalt stuff, I assumed I could just buy (for a price) the potted electronics component. No go, you have to buy the whole motor, trigger, and electronics as a unit. It costs more than a new saw. Um, if a replacement part costs more than the product itself why would I ever buy one?
I did order a new bare saw and put this dead one away for spare parts. I have way too many dewalt batteries and tools to buy something else. When I'm 40' up in the air in a lift and need to trim a branch out of the way this saw is awesome, I'll never take a gas saw up in the air again. However, the gas saw does remain a staple as it is rebuildable and works year after year.
Come on Dewalt, if this was a design flaw, own up to it and do a service recall. Otherwise, make components available individually (and for a reasonable price) so we can repair this saw the same way I've repair my dozens of other Dewalt tools.

Great tool
il y a 5 ans
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] owned a couple of chain saws in my life, but I’m the last to tell you I’m any expert. Generally the deal is making sure the engine will start...and continue to run. Pros will just hold the saw in one hand and jerk the cord. Me, on the other hand, have to put the saw on the ground, make sure I’ve flipped all the correct switches and settings and then with one foot on the floor plate, a hand on the throttle and the other hand on the pull rope, I start the process of trying to get the saw (which has only seen a few trees in it’s lifetime) to start. If you have old fuel or a bad plug, you have to mess with it more or finally throwing in the towel and taking it to the shop.
Those days are gone...
I bought the DeWalt chain saw knowing it would be a compromise from what I once had and what I had been using (a sawzall) to cut limbs, etc.
I filled the oil reserve on the left side of the saw with bar oil, then put on the battery. From there I went to my first “victim” some branches I needed to cut off a tree. I pressed the trigger release and the trigger, the saw came to life and sliced the 2 inch limb like butter. Next I cut a couple of 30’ pine trees with trunks probably 8-10” in diameter. No problem. I then sectioned the two trees...no problem. I then cut some major limbs off a birch tree...no problem. Next a couple of small birch trees, about the same size as the pines...no problem. After sectioning 4 or 5 trees into logs for burning and cleaning up the smaller branches I moved on to cleaning up a couple of small stumps and a couple of other small trees. Other than binding the chain a couple of times (due to inexperience) I think I cut down a total of 6 trees, sectioned 4 of them and cleaning up a number of other things in the yard...
I did this all on one battery.
The saw really didn’t get slow but I figured it was starting to show some minor fatigue...as was I. I brought the battery in the house to recharge.
If you have to cut down a large tree, you may want to go with something else, but I cut down 6 medium sized trees and basically cleaned up after them with no issue and on one battery charge.
Whoever designed this thing was a genius. I don’t plan to buy another gasoline saw again. You can also bet this thing will be with me on whatever camping or backyard bonfire we have. It will also be one of the things I’ll have with me if we have another ice storm or hurricane.
I was so impressed I also bought the hedge trimmer that runs on the same battery. I’ll let you know how that works out.
Anyway, this is a really good saw. It is well worth considering for any small to medium chore you have for a chainsaw.
