Keeping my old tools alive!
il y a 5 ans
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am so happy I picked up this adaptor! I had a nice set of old 18v drills and an impact, but the old batteries just couldn't hold a charge for more than 5 minutes. While I did end up getting a new 20V Max drill and impact, my old tools still had life left in them. Enter this adaptor. It allows me to use my new 20v batteries and have back up tools, or have a double set of tools for a big job. The only down side to this adaptor that I have found is the added mass to the tool, but that is a given. The reduced size of the Li-Ion battery pack helps make up for that. I have used this for close to a year now, and have yet to have any troubles with it.

I, too, have discovered that DeWalt batteries left attached to this adapter will run completely down overnight. Given DeWalt's own statement that "You should stop using a battery as soon as you feel a substantial decrease in power from the tool. Completely running down a battery may damage it" (https://www.dewalt.com/dewalt-dna/featured-articles/best-practices-for-battery-life ), this dies-while-attached behavior directly contributes to the ruination of the battery. If you suspect you will occasionally forget to detach the battery when done using the tool then this is probably not the device for you, especially given the cost of replacement batteries.
I've had this kit for about a week. Charged both batteries before using" and each tool ran ok the first (short) time I ran them. The next day, one tool was totally dead and the other ran a very short time.
After reading a review, I see that leaving the battery in the adapter drains it. This makes the kit useless in my opinion. The last regular 18v batteries I bought had a short life. So this makes two purchases in a row that lead to disappointment.
As another reviewer mentioned, they also don't fit the tools well. Darn near impossible to remove. I don't suspect Dewalt will do anything about this.
I bought two 20V 8ah batteries because this adapter says it should work with them. When I went to put the battery on my drill, there are two little plastic prongs keeping it from making contact. And they're not flexvolt or premium or whatever nonsense, just regular dewalt 20V batteries. It works great with small batteries that last a half hour, but that's pretty stupid they didn't at least mention on the packaging that the normal sized batteries are incompatible. They didn't mention it at all. Now I ended up spending a lot of money on dewalt junk for nothing.

A lifesaver for some of my DEWALT 18 volt tools!
il y a 5 ans
Just bought and tried it out in a few of my 18 volt tools that still work well but needed new batteries. Seeing as I have upgraded recently to some new 20 volt DEWALT tools, buying 18 volt batteries is now a waste of time and money.Tried it out last night in an 18 volt XR drill/driver with a 5 AH 20 volt battery and it worked fine. I had read some reviews about trouble getting the battery out,and initially the first try was hard but with more extractions the removal is firm but now installs and removes fine.
A good solution for us who have dozens of DW tools using old batteries. I can not believe that nobody at quality control did not see that the release system is an abomination. Short of buying many of the adapters, it is frustrating and inefficient to move the adapter from one tool to another one. If it slipped by quality control, it should have been immediately recalled. Most of my friends woodworkers and myself feel that DW does not care about customers satisfaction. Hard to believe.
I bought this to enable me to continue using some of the older tools without buying more of the older style batteries. For that, it works great. However, it does not have any warning the connecting the battery to the adapter will drain the battery when not used. This is a surprise. Now I always remove the battery when finished using the adapter. I think this is a surprise and a negative for this product since leaving the battery attached to the tools does not drain the batteries.
