Certain disposable particulate respirators including the 8511 are sold in both occupational and consumer markets. When used in occupational settings around hazardous materials, OSHA requires a respirator program including medical evaluation, respirator fit testing and training. In contrast, most consumers probably don’t have access to a full respirator program. Therefore, on the consumer packaging, we state not to use in a harmful environment. Rather consumers may use these respirators to help reduce exposure to “nuisance dust”. Based on your comments, it sounds like you have the consumer packaging.
