Great Cut Off Tool, light and reliable

This is another great product from Milwaukee. I'm a big fan of this brand, but this cutting tool helps a lot with tasks that need to get the job done quickly, whether it's cutting small metals like screws or even some thicker metal plates. I loved the rotation control, which lets you choose the direction in which to send the sparks, without hurting anyone or damaging equipment. This tool is very light, easy to use and the best advantage is that it's cordless, there is no more tangle in the cables when using it. I truly recommend it.

Wish I Got This Little Saw Sooner!

So far I have used this saw for cutting plaster and it works great, although it would be better if it would cut up to 1” deep as it didn’t cut all the way through. I hooked it up to my shop vac and it made the job virtually dust free (other than when it is first plunged into the plaster or when the battery runs out on the vac...). Haven’t used the tile or metal blades yet but am planning on using the tile blade when I get ready to cut some floor tile where I need to put a marble threshold in. Just wish it came with a wood blade...

What a great tool

While I had seen this tool a few times, I had never looked at it up close. The very first time I picked it up, I realized what a jewel it was. Perfectly designed for the finesse cut that you can’t get with a recip saw. It is easy to hold and control and the reversing blade rotation is genius. I have used it to cut nails, wood trim, plastic pipe, sheet metal, vinyl flooring, and drywall. It should work great for trimming a fender, cutting a tail pipe, plumbing, remodeling, etc. this is already my most-used tool next to my drill.

I find it to be underpowered

Using a standard 12v LI battery I find the 3" CCOT to stall and die relatively quickly. Short of cutting off a bolt, I've needed to either switch batteries or switch to a corded grinder to complete my task. Prior to purchasing I thought this was going to be the best thing since sliced bread. I haven't tried any of the other cordless grinders but this product makes me leery of their performance. I haven't tried to cut aluminum or drywall. It would probably be fine. Using it to cut tile or heat duct has left me wanting more

Great safer tool for many uses!

Fantastic tool. The cut off tool is perfect for doing fine cuts in tile. I had a tile project and it was way easier than trying to use a traditional grinder, way more light weight and accurate. I also enjoy that the grinder appears to have its own brake, it doesn’t continually spin like the grinder I have does and it stops relatively quickly. Makes this to feel a lot more safe to use. The hose attachment is a nice addition to minimize dust when needed. Battery life is very reasonable as well. This is one of my favorite tools. It is also awesome for extracting stripped out screws and security (one way) screws. Simply cut a slit in the screw head and use a flathead screw driver to remove. I use to work in building maintenance and we would use this tool often.

It's a cut off tool, it cuts stuff Pretty simple but still works quite well, the included dust director works quite well and without it the amount of dust you'll be spewing dust everywhere and make quite the mess as it be expected with using a tool like this. The tool comes with multiple cutting wheels and they all work quite well, I was easily able to cut through sheet metal, flat tube, and an old bike lock I had sitting around. Overall, would recommend. It's a great cut off tool and the cordless part aint too shabby

Came in handy at just the right time

I was installing a sink for the in-laws. Of course the old sink is smaller than the new one, it mounts differently the whole nine yards. After using the Milwaukee Oscillating Multitool to trim the edges, I came up to some metal edging. While I'm sure it would have got the job done eventually (my blades didn't help), this Cut Off Tool was zip, zip, done. Best feature was able to control rotation direction. I really bought this for no particular job, thought it would be good to have. Week later found a use! Life saver actually.

I primarily have used this tool to make cuts in drywall. The accessory guard comes in handy for setting the depth of the cut and dust extraction. Forward and reverse setting on the tool is nice, especially when not using the accessory guard. Love that an LED light was included on it. What would take this tool from good to great would be if Milwaukee were to also produce a dedicated wood blade or a multi-material blade that is also rated for wood cutting. (I could not find one produced by Milwaukee at least in my searches.)

Love these tools, and build quality. I don’t have time for tool breakdown and these have never let me down. This new cut saw performs flawlessly. All my tools from Milwaukee are task specific. Never thought the M12 series was strong enough. They in fact are far better in performance than I expected in their smaller line of tools. So much so that I am in no great hurry to collect the M18 series. Although that will be my next collection. Unless the company wants to send me some M18 tools to kickstart that collection. 😉

More uses than expected.

Great for cutting drywall. Hooked up to my Milwaukee vac and had minimal dust cutting drywall and depth gauge worked perfectly. One handed operation was key for detailed sheet metal cutting above ceilings. Cut sealtite and emt conduits. Struggled a little with cutting unistrut but works in a pinch. Incredibly multi functional and small. Grab this little guy instead of several other tools on a jobsite. 4 amp hour battery is necessary for most cuts. If you work it hard it'll eat through batteries, but overall does well.

So to start i already have the straight and 90 degree die grinders, i have another brand cordless Sawzall and a corded angle grinder (on my list to replace both those with milwaukee) now each have their own strong points, but where THIS tool fits in is between the others. It may be a job requiring the ppwer akin to an angle grinder but you need the smaller precision size of a die grinder so what do you do? You get this tool! Die grinders are great for smaller precision work and sawzall and angle grinders to heavy duty. This allows you to have a good bit more power than a die grinder but the precision for smaller spaces. It would come in handy much more often than many think and as always being a part of the m12 fuel system means batteries from other tools pop right in.

Great idea, but could be made better

This was something I thought would be a great little tool for cutting out drywall when abating a basement that got wet. Really thought I would be able to cut a clean, straight line all the way around the room, and I was, but you need to be very patient with this little guy. I runs crazy fast, but has almost no power and bogs down way to easily. I also wish it had a variable speed trigger so you had some control over things. Cuts through 1/4" metal just fine, and maybe 1/2" if you are patient with it, but did not take the drywall like I had hoped it would. I also wish it had a wood blade (though the speed might prohibit that) as this little guy would be perfect for cutting holes in the floor for HVAC duct boots if it had a bit more power and could use a wood blade.

Way better than expected

This thing is a beast. Don’t let its size deceive you. I had been using another brands 5” cutting wheel to cut 2” DOM tubing, and would smoke a wheel fairly quickly. When I got the Milwaukee 3” cut tool, I fully expected to destroy that tiny wheel in half a cut. NOPE! Absolutely no problems cutting through, and 1 wheel lasted for the entire rest of the project. Worth every penny. The forward and backward options are one of the best features, lets you cut in any angle or direction and not catch a face full of sparks.

Weight and portability is very nice. Bought for doing high end aluminium soffit and siding. Could use an 18v version, as power is a little lacking unless you slap a 6AH battery on. Directional blade control is a game changer, as there are many different applications. Love the dust shoe, great for keeping the metal fragments contained during a cut. Only things I would change is the range in which the guard can turn, and the light should illuminate the material in front of the dust shoe, instead of from underneath

The saw was used to cut holes through plaster and lathe so that HVAC ducts could be installed. The saw worked very well on the plaster, ok on wood lathe (mainly due to the blade & RPM). If you go slow an make multiple passes, the wood lathe is cut easily, although some smoke was generated. If you use the dust containment shroud that comes with the saw, make sure your vacuum is as good as the saw. Great tool, also used on gutter down spouts, cut it like a hot knife in butter, I think I just retired my tin snips!

Awsome in theory but underpowered/can’t keep up

To start off with I own more than a dozen of the M12 tools and several of the M18s and love the brand. I got the cut off saw thinking it would be great around the garage and property alike but man was I upset the first time, second time, and from there on out when I use it. The breaker constantly shuts it off after seconds of gentle if any pressure into a cut even on PVC! I thought maybe I needed the bigger battery but got same results with a new 6.0. Feel like I purchased a cool looking toy that now gathers dust. What made matters worse I also got the m12 hack saw which is also seriously underpowered. questioning if I should switch brands now, a buddy has the yellow tools in their new 12v line up and have zero power issues I hate to admit because I much prefer the mileaukee.

I purchased the M 12 cut off wheel to get into smaller places that my angle grinder or compact bandsaw can get. Makes quick work of threaded rod. Easy to handle and maneuver with one hand. With the right disk/wheel it cuts right through stainless steel unit strut. I have also used it to make cut outs in wooden panels. It is easier to control than my Rotory tool however you must keep it square to avoid binding. I am a big fan of Milwaukee products and can’t wait to try more of the Milwaukee line of products.

I needed a tool to cut a big padlock off that I lost the key. I bought a bolt cutter which took lots of effort and I was not successful cutting the lock. I bought this and it sliced through it effortlessly. I have a couple of small metal cutting projects coming up and it will work perfect. I am a DIY’er not a professional. I found this tool easy to use and very powerful. I like that the cutting wheel can be set forward or reverse so that you can shoot the sparks and fragments away from you. Great tool.

I purchased this product specifically for use with drywall originally. I was working on a high end home with a need for very minimal dust creation. This little tool handled the situation with ease, not only cutting through drywall, but also the aluminum corners and edges. This little guy exceeded my expectations not only for that job, but also a number of other projects. From cutting aluminum soffit, to making precise cuts when tiling, i can safely say that aside from my impact, I now consider this my most useful tool. 10/10 would buy this again 8/10 satisfaction Pros: Light Easy to use Durable Extremely versatile Easy to change blades Cons: No utility belt attachment Not compatible with m18 vaccum Will eat through the smallest batteries, but 3.0 is fine

Stops every few seconds during cutting

I’m a diesel mechanic and I bought this thing for one because die hard Milwaukee fan and two for use on road calls versus dragging out a air hose but this thing I was not impressed with no matter what I cut with it fully charged battery, new blade, not applying too much pressure or getting it in bind it will cut for a few seconds then stop takes twice as long with this than rolling out the air hose and using air cut off tool which defeats the purpose but really disappointing the fact I love Milwaukee

I work for an electrical company named G Technology, INC. Milwaukee is top choice of tools at my shop, I'm the shop manager. We do control work for big companies and cutting squares on a metal box to add switches can become hard if you don't have the right tool. I own several Milwaukee battery operated tools. I have always been impressed with the quality, battery life, and performance of the Milwaukee tools. Unfortunately, this is not the case with the M12 FUEL 3" Compact Cut Off Tool. The tool was barely able to cut wood (using a 3" Loonpon HHS Saw Blade). The saw depleted two new, fresh M-12 batteries, in less than 14" of cutting a pine board. I did not use the saw for cutting metal. The saw does not seem to have enough power to function as a useful tool.

Quick work under controlled function

I’ve mainly used this unit for cutting up stainless steel sheet stock. I wasn’t having much success with my grinder. I was surprised at how quickly this unit cut the material. I actually really like this tool, my only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is because the base that attaches to the tool was bent or something, so it can’t get to a point of be 90 degrees to the cutter head. I think it must have been bent in manufacturing or in the shipment some how, but there’s no visible damage to the box.

I bought this saw to cut through tile walls to replace shower valves. The first cut on the first job I literally had to sit back with amazement on how good it cut through tile. The saw is easily controlled with one hand and did not want to jump around when plunge cutting. The dust catching attachment was an amazing addition really saved clean up time at the end, just make sure you have the blade rotation set correctly. I highly recommend it. The best way to cut through am tile wall that I have seen.

Way underpowered and overpriced

I love how it feels, the concept and design also. It feels good in your hand but found it to be way underpowered for any metal thicker than gauged sheet metal it wouldn’t even cut a piece of 1/8in aluminum tread plate. I even tried as shallow of a cutting pass as it would go but it kept just shutting down and I didn’t try again just grabbed my grinder. So as far as my opinion goes I wish I hadn’t even bought it. In Closing Way under powered for most anything a person would use it for I have found

People ask: why the lighter stuff ? Do you really need those smaller tools ? Well,if you don't got em you don't know, but when you need to cut out an insert for a linghtswitch in tile, or you need to cut a few lag bolts down to size, and all you had to do was reach into your toolbox real fast for a small but surprisingly strong tool and be done in minutes flat, then you'll know why you need the lighter stuff. Of course I'm talking milwaukee m12 here, as all 12 volt tools don't have the power.

I've only used this a handful of times so far, but I have tested all three blades. Tons of power with all 3. As a tilesetter, the diamond blade is a little coarse for fine work, but the abrasive blade is great for metal, and I used the carbide blade to cut out Drywall for a niche. This is where I found the only flaw. Even with my big Ridgid vacuum reduced down to fit on the adapter, I still found quite a bit of dust escaping with the boot on. Other than that, this is a definite winner!!

This cut off saw works great for metal up to a 1/4 inch. It works for sheet goods or bar stock. Just mark or scribe your cut, line up the saw and press the power button and make your cut. Visibility of the cut line is good during the cut. You can adjust your feed rate based on the thickness of the material. The design of the cut off tool naturally keeps your cut straight. I prefer the cut off tool vs. a hand held grinder for straight cuts. The M12 cut off tool is small but mighty.

This li'l fella works great on softer material, but steel gives it a workout. I can't really quantify the battery life and usefulness, but was disappointed in how short the 2.0Ah battery lasted when cutting 1/8" steel plate. I had to bust out the corded cutoff wheel to get what I was working on done. That said, I'm sure the 6.0Ah battery would make this a great tool. I've cut wood, fiberglass, aluminum, and steel, but will use something more powerful for future steel cutting.

I'm an electrician. This tool let's me cut pipes, strut, and metal framing pretty much anywhere. Easy to crawl through attics and under houses with. I use it while on ladders and lifts also. It has probably saved me 10 plus hours of work and I've only had it for a few weeks. The M12 line hasn't let me down yet. I recommend this cutoff tool and the rest of M12 tool line to all my apprentices. Thanks Milwaukee for your dedication to making the working man's life safer and easier.
