choosing the right stock tank de-icer

When the cold weather arrives, it’s important to make sure that the water in your stock tanks doesn’t freeze. There are several types of tank de-icers on the market, but which one should you buy? Here are 4 tips to help you make the right choice.

Floating or submersible de-icers

As their name suggests, floating de-icers are designed to float on the surface of the water, while submersible de-icers rest on the bottom of the tank. If you’re looking for a semi-permanent solution, consider a drain plug de-icer. It is secured in a fixed mount position and has the added benefit of the cord coming out of the bottom of the tank, unnoticed by livestock.

De-icers for metal or plastic tanks

All de-icers can be used in metal tanks. If the tank is plastic, you must choose a de-icer that is SAFE for use in plastic. All de-icers sold at Agrizone and BMR, with the exception of model 002-0777, are safe for use in plastic without the need for a guard.

Copper or cast aluminium heating elements

Although less expensive, de-icers with copper or alloy heating elements must be equipped with a guard if they are to be used in a plastic tank. All our cast aluminum heating elements are safe for use in plastic. They are virtually indestructible, and are more effective and more energy efficient than de-icers with regular elements.

De-icer power : tank size and temperature

The larger the tank size and the lower the outside temperature, the more wattage you’ll need. Make the right choice for your climate zone and tank size by consulting the chart provided.

A few helpful tips

  • Protect your tank from the wind, which quickly removes the heat from the surface of the stock tank.
  • Avoid using long extension cords, which will reduce the wattage (power) to the unit.
  • Buy the right de-icer for your particular needs.
  • Remove any lime build-up on the heating element. Lime will decrease the de-icer’s performance and service life.
  • Read and follow all the manufacturer’s instructions.
